Working Out on the Road

As usual, we have been busy, busy, busy around here.  Last week, Kelly and I traveled with my parents to California.  That trip was full of firsts- first flight, first time out of the state, first time at the beach, first time at a hotel, and I’m sure there were a few more.

Luckily Kelly has always been a pretty flexible baby so sleeping in a hotel was no problem (my parents who shared a room with us the first night may disagree Smile).  We had a lot on our schedule and she was a champ- although I’m sure meeting a lot family that kept telling her how cute she is didn’t hurt either.

Traveling with a baby definitely requires a bit of planning and extra logistics but having my parents with me made it seem much easier.  I was worried how it would be not having any of Kelly’s playmats or other toys that usually give me a little break but my parents were great about watching her and giving me some time to work out or shower.

The hotel gym was just okay but better than some that I’ve seen.  On Thursday, I set up a Tabata-style circuit workout based on what was available.  Luckily I had the gym to myself so I could set everything up as I pleased.  Whenever I am feeling a little unmotivated in the gym, setting up a workout using the Tabata method helps me to get things going.  I tell myself that I can always push myself hard for 20 seconds but trust me, you will get your butt kicked!

(Here is some more info about Tabata workouts)

The next day my legs were feeling it after those jumping lunges (I’m pretty sure everyone I was with was aware of that since I did my fair share of complaining about soreness) but I still wanted to take advantage of being at sea level so I turned to Jess’ treadmill workouts page.

I will definitely be using this workout again because I was a sweaty mess afterwards.  I can’t imagine what the guy on the treadmill next to me was thinking but I’m just hoping that he didn’t get hit by my sweat spray.  The only modifications that I made was setting my speeds at 6.5 and 8.0 (instead of 9.0) and the last two rounds, I just did the last 2 minutes at the 8.5 instead of using the cool down time because it required too much button pushing.

I know there’s not always time to work out while on the road but if you can find a half hour here or there, I find that it adds to my vacation rather than taking away from it.  It’s also a great time to try out some creative workouts, like biking around a new city, jogging on the beach, etc.

Questions:

What workouts do you prefer when you’re on the road?

Have you ever been guilty of bringing a screaming baby on a plane?

-Kelly was great on the first flight, screamed her head off on our first flight on the way home, and slept for the entire last flight.
