When I first found out that I was pregnant, I was definitely concerned about how it would affect my fitness levels and how much activity I would be able to do. Morning sickness hit me hard in the first trimester so there were a couple weeks when standing up for a long period of time was a major accomplishment. Walking usually made me feel better but it was tough to get up and out the door.
Now that we are in the second trimester, I have been feeling much better! I am usually in bed by 8 am, but I’m up around 5 am and very active throughout the day. My doctor is a big advocate of staying active and maintaining similar workouts to the ones you were doing before you got pregnant (with some modifications of course). When I told her that Shane and I were training for a half marathon on March, she told me to go for it and just to make sure that I am very aware of how I am feeling throughout and not to push too hard.
I still get a lot of warnings from Shane and my mom not to overdo it but staying active is a way for me to stay in tune with my body during this pregnancy rather than just sitting back and seeing how it reacts. I have definitely been scaling back the workouts but of course I don’t want to do anything to potentially harm our baby. When I got back from England, Shane surprised me with a little present- Runner’s World Guide to Running & Pregnancy.
I immediately opened it up and started skimming the different chapters. I’m really excited to start reading it in more details and I really like the way that the book is divided and provides information month by month. I haven’t been talking too much about the pregnancy on the blog but as the weeks go along, the more that my day to day life starts to revolve around this little turnip (What to Expect’s reference, not mine!).
Yesterday was our 16 week check up and everything is looking good. This was one of the more anti-climatic appointments and we were only with the doctor for about 15 minutes total. The big news is that we now have our 20 week ultrasound appointment on the calendar which is when we can find out the gender! It wasn’t until after we booked the appointment that Shane pointed out that it happens to fall on our two year anniversary which is cheesy but I like it.
Anyway, back to business as usual. Since I’ve been back from England, I’ve been all about the protein smoothies for breakfast. Today’s was a strawberry and peach combination that ended up even better than I thought it would. I have been in the mood for tropical flavors and I think it’s because I am ready for summer and the sunshine!
I took yesterday off from working out so today my plan is to check out a local rec center (since it’s too cold outside and I don’t want to mess up the house for showings). I am very busy with work right now since we came up with a huge to do list in England plus I needed to catch up on all regular work that was put on the back burner while we were gone so a lunch break at the gym sounds like a good way to let off some steam.
Question:
Who else is ready for summer?!
Do you prefer fruity smoothies or are you more of a chocolate fan?

Very cool that your doc is encouraging you to go for the half! A couple years ago I regularly took a boot camp class (that kicked my @$$), and there was a lady in it, who kept getting bigger and bigger around the tummy. Finally, I realized she was pregnant. She took that class religiously up until three days before she gave birth! What a freakin’ champ!
